Revolvers, Pistols & Handguns

New American Truth

Just recently, a man I’ve known nearly all my life (since I was four years old) called my attention to the fact that I’ve inappropriately been using the term “Pistol” in my reviews and articles. He, quite accurately, pointed out that – by definition – a revolver is a pistol but not all pistols are revolvers. Some pistols are semi-automatic handguns. Not one to simply accept his comments as fact (even if he was right) I decided to do some specific research to find out what the history of the terms is and to discover whether or not I was in fact improperly using the terms. It was interesting enough that I decided to share. Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t Believe The Hype

New American Truth

If we believe everything that is printed in the mainstream media (MSM) these days, our country is facing huge problems. I’m not talking about the wars or the economy; those ARE challenges our country is facing. I’m talking about – to me – fictional issues that are sensationalized by the MSM to pump up their sales. Things like the deepening racial divide, growing gun violence, and the chasm between police and citizens. Read the rest of this entry »

The American Royal Family

New American Truth

Last spring my family and I began planning our family vacation this year. We were going to Orlando, FL to Universal Studios for the new Harry Potter stuff and, of course, there’s plenty else to do in Orlando. Our plans were changed however as budgeting realities fell into place and we’re now vacationing much closer to home, for six days instead of eight and even that’s tight. It leaves me longing for the ability to take a quarter million dollar vacation… Read the rest of this entry »

Un-Common Sense August 2010

Recently I’ve found myself tired. Not just tired from working ten-hour days, six days a week or dealing with a one year old at home either. I’m tired of the crap coming out of Washington (and Sacramento for that matter). Tired of the media spending more time on Lindsay Lohan than reporting that the majority of America completely despises the direction this country is going. I watch the nightly news and read everything I can but I keep coming back to the same conclusion. The media reports inane BS to keep us from noticing we are truly headed down the toilet. Most of the polls agree that decisions inside the Beltway have nothing to do with popular opinion. Read the rest of this entry »

Concealment Holsters 101

By Ralph Mroz

***

Experienced gun-carriers often joke among themselves about the “drawer full” of holsters that they’ve accumulated over the years…and don’t use. The reasons are several. It takes a while to find just the right holster for you; you probably need a few different kinds of holsters for a few different guns; some holsters are well made and some aren’t. Now do all the permutations of these reasons multiplied by the dozens of holster manufacturers, custom holster makers, and semi-custom makers, and you wind up with…well, a whole lot of holsters that you don’t use, and a few that you regularly do. Specialty Munitions at Home

A sound you can’t readily identify wakes you up. Laying still, holding your breath, you listen hard – and hear it again. Your heart rate picks up as you roll out of bed, quietly pad over to your closet, thankful you paid attention and the hinges don’t squeak. Reaching up above the door you pull your shotgun down from where it hangs… tubular magazine fully loaded, chamber empty, safety on. Because you’ve planned and prepared your house has “night lights” strategically placed so that you can move out of your bedroom without being backlit while the light ahead of you in the house seems bright because of your fully developed night vision. An adult male shape moves across your line of sight at the end of the hall… moving from the kitchen to the family room. It’s a much larger person than anyone else in the house. Your children’s bedrooms are behind you; your bedroom – where you wife still lays sleeping – is behind you. “Hey!” you shout, unsure what else to say, and tromboning the action on your shotgun, chambering the first round. Your expectation is that any criminal hearing a shotgun round chambering will be smart and exit through whatever entry point he created, hauling ass rather than facing a belching shotgun. Not this idiot. Read the rest of this entry »

The “Tactical” Citizen

Tactical – as defined by dictionary.com –
1. of or pertaining to tactics, esp. military or naval tactics.
2. characterized by skillful tactics or adroit maneuvering or procedure: tactical movements.
3. of or pertaining to a maneuver or plan of action designed as an expedient toward gaining a desired end or temporary advantage.
4. expedient; calculated.
5. prudent; politic.

Given our magazines reading audience I probably don’t have to discuss the merits of being prudent or expedient. That said, I’ve noticed a movement in the law enforcement community away from referring to SWAT officers as “tactical” officers. The implication is that patrol officers aren’t tactical because they aren’t SWAT cops. Reality is that every law enforcement professional who wants to go home alive at the end of his or her shift should be tactical. Read the rest of this entry »

Six Ps

“Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance”

I can’t begin to tell you how many sergeants I heard that from when I was in the Army. When I worked for a uniformed private security company I heard it a few more times (that’s an understatement). When I worked security at a large theme park I heard this from virtually every service manager from the landscaping guy to the head lifeguard. Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. It was their mantra at the park.

As an “average every day citizen” though, what do you need to plan for? We don’t usually realize it because we do it so often, but you plan things every day – often days, weeks or months in advance. For instance… Read the rest of this entry »

20 Basic Survival Preparation Tips

Evacuating your area (getting out of town quick):

1) Have a bug-out pack or bag for each family member and even pets. Bug-out bags are pre-packaged support bags or backpacks designed for loading into your vehicle and getting away from your present location when minutes really count.

Items to consider in a bug-out bag (one stingy adult for 7-10 days and not in a cold winter environment): Read the rest of this entry »
